What’s for Breakfast? ICE CREAM!

While some people might like Ice Cream for Breakfast Day to be every day, Café Carmel will be celebrating the once-a-year event Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, by offering a special buy-two-get-one free ice cream special — any size!

You can purchase any size of two ice creams and get the third ice cream of equal value free on Feb. 6. Café Carmel carries the Santa Cruz favorite Marianne’s Ice Cream, which offers a variety of flavors and flavor combinations — cinnamon and caramel anybody?

The rules for Ice Cream for Breakfast Day are pretty simple:

  1. Eat ice cream.
  2. On Saturday, Feb 6
  3. For breakfast. That’s it!
The holiday began in the 1960s when the mother of six, Florence Rappaport of Rochester, New York, on a cold, snowy day in February, wanted to entertain her children. The kids were complaining that it was too cold and they couldn’t do anything, so she suggested ice cream for breakfast. Every year after that, her kids reminded her every February that it was Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and the tradition continued.    As the children grew up and had their own families, went to college, and expanded their base of friends and family, the tradition spread. Thanks to Florence’s grandchildren, who traveled extensively, the tradition spread around the world, and is now celebrated on the first Saturday in February, whether it’s cold and snowy or the sun is shining bright!
