In the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Café Carmel keeps alive a tradition that dates back to 1952, when the Wishart family opened a bakery in a now-historic 1920s building on Ocean Avenue. Wishart Bakery became a local institution, always serving its signature coffee cake. In July of 2019, Sarah Cook took over ownership and will celebrate the cafe’s 71st birthday on Aug. 30 by offering a free coffee cake square to each visitor from 3-4 p.m. Also that day, anyone can enter their name to win a free 8-inch birthday cake on a future date. Café Carmel is on the north side of Ocean Avenue between Mission and San Carlos Streets.
