Café Carmel celebrates National Ice Cream Month with decadent scoops of Monterey Bay favorite Marianne’s

In a typical year, the average American consumes nearly 13 pounds of ice cream. Not surprisingly, that number shot up during the pandemic as we all screamed for ice cream — the ultimate comfort food.

The first true ice cream appeared in America around 1744, long before we even claimed our independence. Café Carmel celebrates this frozen treat (and our country’s birthday) throughout July, which is National Ice Cream Month.

Café Carmel is proud to carry Marianne’s Ice Cream, the famous, family-owned creamery that started in Santa Cruz back in 1947. Café Carmel customers who purchase 10 cones during the month will receive the 11th free.

Open on Monday, July 4, Café Carmel will celebrate another imported American institution — Caesar salad. Oddly enough, this iconic salad was not named after Julius Caesar, but rather an Italian man named Caesar Cardini, who introduced his pungently dressed salad in Tijuana, Mexico, in the early 1900s!

Café Carmel’s version of Caesar salad has developed a strong local following. Café Carmel’s version is made with Little Gem Lettuces and topped with whole white anchovies, this Italian inspiration by way of Mexico will tickle your taste buds.
